Have you tried booting in VESA mode, open the Screen prefs, and pressing "Apply". Apparently this creates ~/config/settings/system/app_server/workspaces. When this file is present, my intel extreme boots up OK. If I delete that file, I get a distorted picture. I tried as you suggested, and verified that the workspaces file existed.
