 While Ctrl-alt-esc switches to a fail-safe video mode, it still relies on
 the accelerant to actually switch the mode. If that is borked, you would
 need to run VESA instead; this is not easily (and probably sometimes not
 at all) possible to switch during runtime, so that key combo indeed cannot
 help you. It's only meant to be used if the monitor cannot support the
 signal the computer currently sends, not for problems of the accelerant
 itself.
