That actually depends on the BIOS of the hardware; the VESA driver would have no problem driving a widescreen panel by itself.

We're just having a great deal of
difficulty finding a solution that meets all our requirements: readily
available, VGA + DVI simultaneously, widescreen resolutions. All
suggestions happily considered!

An Intel based solution would of course be the most convenient, and cheap.
mmlr started reworking the driver some time ago to fix its design issues. However, he didn't finish his work, and left it uncompleted:

That would be a good starting point if the driver should be updated, in any case.
