Tom and all,

It ran and then disappeared so I don't know if there was anything that 
needed fixing but it did access the cd.

Hi,
Have you tried running SFC with the /scannow switch? This is similar to SFC
in Windows 98 but the replacement of corrupted or missing system files is
more or less automatic. Have your XP CD handy.

To do this, just go to the Run dialog and type:

sfc /scannow

and press enter. Let it do it's thing and then reboot. Hope this helps.
