Have you run a registry cleaner to clear out some unnecessary keys and
values that can slow down a system?
I have a good one called Registry Mechanic that is a little poor on
accessibility, but doable and really does a good job of reducing the size of
the registry without affecting important entries.
Just a thought.

Good question. As I think about it, though, I have not removed any
hardware without uninstalling drivers.

Have you removed any hardware without uninstalling any drivers? That
will slow a machine drastically.
