My understanding is that much of WAI-ARIA is incorporated into HTML 5, so the WAI-ARIA specs are as relevant as ever. Web developers unfamiliar with the history, however, may think of it as just part of HTML 5.
By the way, I also learned that IE9 currently has the best browser support for WAI-ARIA, followed by Firefox, with Chrome and Safari last. I'm copying a couple other lists that may be interested in these impressions from the CSUN conference last week.
