Hi all

At last I can tell this story but only because the person who told me this
secret died a few years ago and he can no longer get into trouble about it.

Do you remember 20 years ago during the first Gulf War even then there was talk
of weapons of mass destruction and there was a scandal at the time about a
super gun and the barrel had been made at a metal works in South Yorkshire and
was to be sent to Iraq.

As you may know I live in Sheffield in South Yorkshire only six miles away from
this factory. Well, one of our neighbours at that time worked at that factory
as the electrition and he later told us that it was true and that it actually
existed.

But it happened like this.

The factory received the order from the Iraq government and the British
government gave it the go-ahead even though we were in theory at war with them.

The company which is still owned by a American company gave the OK and the
chief executive and director put there signature to the authority for the work
to take place.

So the workmen on the furnace floor got a number of metal ingots and put them
in the furnace and melted them down and shaped them into this massive barrel.
They then took it out of the furnace and left it to cool then had it
transferred to the warehouse to await shipment.

The company applied for an Exportation licence. This application crossed a
certain persons desk in the British Government who thought it an outrage and
tipped off the press and showed them copies of the application as proof.

The first anyone new of this was when the story broke in the newspapers and the
executives rushed into work that day to find that the police or press had not
yet arrived at the sight to ask questions.

The board and executives had an emergency meeting because they new it would be
only a matter of time before someone arrived who would cause trouble and the
public would cause a stink if the truth was discovered.

The Chief executive summoned the foreman of the work shop and told him to get
rid of the barrel and he didn't want to know how. While the foreman did this
the Chief Executive fed certain documents through the paper shredder.

The foreman took all non essential workers of there duties and sent a couple of
them to neighbouring building sites for help. They helpfully provided the use
of 2 diggers and a number of cement mixers.

Fortunately, for the company there had recently been some work done on site as
some drains had been replaced and there was a large hole in the ground on site.
The diggers enlarged the hole and were then sent away. Cranes were sent into
the warehouse to bring the super gun barrel out and then lowered into the hole.
The hole was then filled with cement and the mixers sent back to the building
site.

A short time later at midday the police arrived at last to investigate and
demanded to speak to the Chief Executive and Director. They simply said that
the company had received the order but had not authorised the work and they
showed the document to the police. The police then demanded to inspect the
warehouse but found nothing and they eventually went away.

Months later when the story was forgotten they dug up the hole and put the
barrel of the super gun back into the furnace and melted the evidence. Soon
after that they all received a bonus to keep there mouths shut.

Cheers

Kevin
