Day of judgment for Scotland
Supporters of the Union must ensure that Alex Salmond's ambitions for Scottish
independence are not just defeated, but buried

The countdown has begun. In 545 days' time - on September 18, 2014 - the people
of Scotland will be asked whether they want to break the ties of centuries, and
leave the United Kingdom. The referendum date is chosen to coincide with the
height of what promises to be a glorious Scottish summer, with events to mark
the 700th anniversary of Bannockburn and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Alex Salmond, Scotland's nationalist First Minister, had hoped to announce the
date from a position of strength - having first sought to skew the referendum's
wording, and the identity of those eligible to take part, to his own advantage.
But with secession now on the table, the deceit and delusion upon which the
SNP's forecasts for an independent Scotland are based are being exposed. Its
defence plans are in disarray and its economic strategy appears to depend on
turning Scotland into a petro-state. This would be so vulnerable to
fluctuations in oil and gas prices that an official report prepared by John
Swinney, the SNP finance minister, has warned that the nation might be unable
to pay for its pension system.
As we have argued before, the question is not whether an independent Scotland
would be sustainable but whether it would be better off economically,
diplomatically or culturally. The polls suggest that a large majority of Scots
has concluded that it would not be. In the meantime, however, the Scottish
administration is so fixated on winning independence that it is subordinating
everything else to that aim. Instead of proper government, the Scots are
subjected to a permanent campaign and a succession of vainglorious stunts. All
the more reason, then, for supporters of the Union to ensure that Mr Salmond's
ambitions are not just defeated, but buried.
