After Oakley had to go back because I was in the wheelchair  I was able to walk 
about again after six months so the doctor advised me to get my name back on 
the list for another dog, so I rang guide dogs and asked them if they would 
come and see if I would be able to have another dog, about four months later I 
went to train with Stokes, he was a black Lab retriever  cross I first saw him 
when I went to the guide dog open day at Exeter   I spoke to one of  the 
trainers I spoke to told me that she thought she might have a dog that would be 
suitable for me, she told me that he was black and Male but did not tell me the 
name, we went down to the kennels and saw a couple of black dogs that were 
there and thought that one of them might be the dog that she was thinking of, a 
few days later she rang me to tell me that she was bringing a dog out to me, 
when she came the dog she brought was Stokes he was a very slow dog and was 
alright on the outward walk but did not want to do the same route on the way 
back, she told me it was just because he didn't know his way around, well we 
decided to go ahead with the training, I went in the August 1997  there were 
about ten of us on the class and I was only there for two weeks and did the 
rest of the training at home, during the time I was at the training centre we 
did all the usual training but one morning it was pouring with rain so the 
trainer said we would do some obedience in the lecture room,
she told me to make Stokes sit then down and to walk away from him, as I walked 
back to him and went to ask him to up sit he suddenly jumped up and ran around 
the lecture room barking his head off and grabbing at things, it took the 
trainer ten minutes to bring him under control as he would not come to either 
of us, she gave him a good telling off but of course that didn't do any good, 
she told me he had never done that before with her, But I told her that he had 
done it with me and that was what I was trying to tell her about, 
the day came when we went home, I was in the bathroom in my room when I heard 
Stokes getting up to something, when I went back into the bedroom I found to my 
horror he had chewed up a special pair of dark glassed that had been made for 
me at the hospital they were for the glare and had side pieces to them to cut 
out the glare, when I got home I had to go to the hospital and told the surgeon 
what had happened and he took the chewed glasses to Tony who was in charge of 
those thing, I was just making my next appointment when he came up behind me 
and said Tony is just coming to kick your dog, I did get another pair of 
glasses from them and thought I would have to pay for them but thankfully I did 
not,
