Vanessa ,you asked what we did in training with the new guide dog .with every
new dog you get ,before you walk out with the dog in harness you first have to
learn verbal commands ,foot work and how to control a dog with a harness and
lead in your left hand which is the side the dog always walks on .you learn
this by holding on to the handle of the harness ant the training person holds
on to the bit where the dog should be and you then walk round like this while
you are shown foot work and turns and such . . .then you walk routes the dog
knows so you can get use to the feel of the dog and learn what sort of voice
the dog responds to .the dogs know the routes you go on if you go to hotel
training as they are trained round there .if you are training from home or once
you get home .you and the trainer walk the routes you are doing with the dog
just on lead and show it where it must find a kerb to cross or a shop door you
want .you then do this on harness and just keep on doing it over and over till
you have a dog which knows where to take you .donna
