Here's an excellent compilation of the sounds they make. This is a great list of the various kinds of sounds that hard disk drives make when they are failing. The sounds are grouped by manufacturer, with the sounds that you really don't want to hear listed for each vendor - Western Digital, Seagate, Samsung, Hitachi/IBM, Maxtor, Fujitsu, Toshiba, and Quantum. Just click on the circle with the triangle inside next to the link to hear the sound for that manufacturer. You can listen to stuck spindles, bad heads, bad bearings, failing heads, and seized spindles. Many of the sounds appear to be somewhat amplified so they can be easily heard. Image of Hard Disk Drive If you hear noises coming from your hard disk drive, back up everything you can as quickly as you can, provided the disk still has some life left in it. :) The hard disks I've had over the years that failed usually failed without a sound or became so slow as to be almost unusable. One made a faint clicking when the disk drive spun up. Your mileage may vary. :) The site with the sounds belongs to a professional data recovery service, with a link and a fast quote box. While it's a commercial site, listening to the various failing hard disk drives is free. Acidic coffee grounds make an excellent soil conditioner or mulch for acid-loving plants like conifers, azaleas and rhodeodendrons. Apply a 3-inch-thick layer of coffee grounds around the base of acid-loving plants, leaving a 6-inch ring of bare soil around the trunk to discourage trunk-eating insects and voles that like to nest in mulch. If you don't have enough organic coffee grounds to feed all your plants, visit your local coffee shop and ask for theirs. _________________________ Recipes For Today: Best Recipes From The Backs Of Boxes, Bottles, Cans And Jars. Sydney Smith _________________________ Did You Know? ... that today is Natural Law Day, marking this date in 1417 when a chicken in Basel, Switzerland, was burned at the stake for violating natural law by laying a brightly colored egg. The chicken was believed to be an Araucana-Ameraucana Strain, or the "Easter Egg Chicken," which gets its name from the Indian tribe of Chile where they were first discovered. Araucanas lay colored eggs of blue-green shades from turquoise to deep olive. _________________________ Random Fact: The ears and nostrils of the hippo, located at the top of the head, close automatically when the animal is under water. It is when you reach the edge of your abilities, and you come face to face with your limitations, that you begin to grow. When you are forced to push yourself beyond the limit, you will raise yourself above the crowd. Give it all you've got, and then give it a little bit more. That little bit will make all the difference. That little bit will turn struggle into achievement. It only takes one point more than the other team, to win the Super Bowl. It only takes a few hundredths of a second less than the nearest runner, to win the race. Making the effort will keep you in the race. Giving a little bit extra on top of that, will make you a winner. _____ The Secret A woman named Vicki once knew a young person at church named Susan. Susan always seemed effervescent and happy, although Vicki knew she had faced struggles in her life. Her long awaited marriage had quickly ended in divorce. She had struggled to get a grip on her single life. She hadn't chosen it, but she decided she would live it with utmost enjoyment and satisfaction. Susan was active in Sunday school, in the choir, as a leader of the junior high girls' group, and in the church renewal movement. Vicki enjoyed knowing Susan. Susan's whole face seemed to smile. One day, Vicki asked Susan, "How is it that you are always so happy, you have so much energy, and you never seem to get down?" With her eyes smiling, Susan said, "I know the Secret!" "What secret is that? What are you talking about?" Vicki asked. Susan replied, "I'll tell you all about it, but you have to promise to share the Secret with others." Vicki agreed, "Okay, now what is it?" The Secret is this: "I have learned there is little I can do in my life that will make me truly happy. I must depend on God to make me happy and meet my needs. When a need arises in my life, I have to trust God to supply according to His riches. I have learned most of the time I don't need half of what I think I do. He has never let me down. Since I learned the Secret, I am happy." Vicki's first thought was, "That's too simple!" But upon reflecting over her own life, she recalled how she thought a bigger house would make her happy, but it didn't. She thought a better paying job would make her happy, but it hadn't. When did she realize her greatest happiness? Sitting on the floor with her grandchildren, playing games, eating pizza or reading a story. A simple gift from God. Susan knew the Secret, Vicki learned the Secret, and now you know it too! We can't depend on people to make us happy. Only God in His wisdom can do that. Trust Him. And now, I pass the Secret on to you! So once you get it, what will you do? YOU have to tell someone the Secret, too! That GOD in His wisdom will take care of YOU! But it's not really a secret... We just have to believe it and do it... Really trust God! _________________________ Where there is sadness, I hope I brought some laughter. Where there is grief, I hope I offered some comfort.
