Actually, I enjoy what I do - I'm just glad I'm able to do it.
By the way, I'm not good at serious stuff.
Oh, I know I need to get a serious point over, but if I am in the pulpit, you
can bet that anything I do is laced with a liberal dose of humour.
I REALLY hate the Po-faced bunch that wouldn't laugh even if you paid them to.
It used to be said in the Church of Scotland that there was an eleventh
commandment - "Thou shalt not laugh".
I'm glad that tripe has gone years ago.
As for being blind and preaching?
Well, my secret is bullet points.
You see, once I've chosen my text to preach on, I think seriously about what I
need to say, put it into six or so phrases, which I memorise, and pad these
'bullet point' phrases out with explanations as I work round them.
As long as I keep the bullet points centred in my mind and bring them out, it
usually works out OK.
Not that I'm not nervous when I preach - I'm ALWAYS nervous when I preach!
I once asked a minister who had been preaching for over forty years if he was
ever nervous in the pulpit.
He told me that the day he stopped being nervous in the pulpit would be the day
he stopped preaching.
You can bet that helped a lot!
