Hi. Vanessa,
We had a speaker from welfare rights at the Blind Club in April.
Some of the changes to benefit qualifications for all types of disability
benefits, including DLA, are truly frightening.
If all the checkboxes are ticked properly, by 2015 it might be technically
possible for a wheelchair bound person who has no vision to lose about thirty
percent of their present benefits.
The prospects are horrifying.
Still, it seems that the new policy is "Out of sight, out of mind".

David Cameron is robbing the poor as rich cash in

At a time when the British people are outraged at the tax dodges of the rich,
David Cameron is about to announce plans for cracking down on the poor.

In a speech tomorrow he will outline proposals to slash another £10billion from
welfare benefits - on top of the billions he has already siphoned off. His
Government has targeted many of those on benefits as workshy scroungers. While
some do take advantage of the system, most of those in receipt of welfare
desperately need the money.

The real scroungers are the super rich who use every trick their expensive
accountants can devise to avoid paying their full taxes.

Although the Prime Minister has tut-tutted over Jimmy Carr's scheme, he says
nothing about the rest of the tax avoiders, letting them get away with it. Yet
now, on top of the welfare cuts already imposed, he plans to end the right of
young people to claim housing benefit, forcing thousands to live with their
parents or on the streets.

The Coalition may also be about to means test pensioners' benefits such as
cheap travel and winter fuel allowance, even though he pledged not to.

If the rich paid their taxes like the rest of us, there would be no need to
keep attacking the meagre incomes of those on benefits. But Cameron goes for
the poor and vulnerable because they are an easy target. It isn't the fault of
those who rely on welfare that the economy is in a mess.

We all know who is to blame... yet they are the ones left free to go on ripping
off the country.

Let Raymond live for music

IT is a tragedy when someone who is only 60 is struck down by dementia - but it
was particularly awful for Raymond Banning.

For he is a world-famous concert pianist who lives for his music. His one hope
was that he could spend his final months at home where he could still play his
beloved grand piano.

But his wife is not well enough to look after him and his local council said it
would cost too much to provide the 24-hour care he needs.

So he has been put in a care home where he has been given a cheap child's
keyboard. The staff probably thought they were doing the best for him. Yet if
that is the best, it is no wonder care homes have such a poor reputation.

It is the mark of a civilised society to treat its older citizens with dignity.

Expecting Mr Banning to be content with a toy keyboard is treating him with
contempt.
