A pet cat had to have a leg amputated after being shot with an air rifle. The
eight-year-old moggie, called Toby, was found outside his home with a pellet
lodged in his front left leg.
His owner, Georgina Hoult, 26, took him to a vet, but the leg couldn't be saved.
Georgina, of Slade Lane, Mobberley, Cheshire, said: "I thought he had been hit
by a car at first. I scooped him up and noticed his leg was really rigid.
"I rushed him to the vet and they found a big hole in the leg. The x-ray
revealed an air rifle pellet in his leg. It had shattered his bone.
"He's recovering at home now. He's very groggy. He seems to be adapting to it
well though.
"He's wobbling around on his three legs. He's a very good-natured thing, very
happy and enjoying cuddles from everyone.
"I think he was shot in a local field and he managed to hobble home.
"The injury is quite horrific. From the wound it looks like he was shot from
about 50ft away.
"He's a big white fluffy thing and you can't mistake him. I don't think it was
an accident. It's just cruelty to animals. It's shocked me. I can't comprehend
the mentality where someone would shoot a dog or a cat.
"Whoever has done it can have no education about how to use that kind of
weapon. Possibly they have done for some kind of sick thrill.
"These people play on video games and when they shoot things they get back up.
They don't realise that in real life it's very different."
Ms Hoult - who runs an online entertainment directory - expressed concern about
the number of air rifles on the streets.
Cheshire Police confirmed they were investigating the incident, which happened
some time between lunchtime on September 6 and the following morning, when Toby
was found hurt in Georgina's garden.
