The State of Georgia State Accounting Office sets statewide travel regulations
that state employees follow. The only thing that I am aware of that changed is
how per diem for meals is calculated. We’ve had a big discussion in my
district about that. I have not read the entire policy but when I looked over
it in preparation of going to Athens, I don’t remember anything about hotel
accommodations being allowed in comparison with the beginning conference time
. . . only that accommodations are allowed when traveling over 50 miles.

I just don’t see it working out for us either because there is so much to do
and taking that time from us would make it more difficult. However,
personally, I would give it more consideration if there were a lot of people
asking that were in North Ga that had a long drive.

I agree with Samantha.
I think since we have set conference times, we need to stick with them. They
know the conference is a 1/2 day on that first day -- right? Thus when I say
'set' times, I simply mean, that we advertise it is a half-day.
I do believe we need to do the best we can for our users, but this is just as
new to us as it is to everyone else. We may want to consider this for future
events, but for this time, districts need to figure out what they will or will
not approve and the users need to plan accordingly.

We cannot set the policy for local school boards and their expectations
concerning travel. I always just planned accordingly. I would look at the
schedule and make sure I allowed myself enough time to travel, register, and
make the first session. But, I only had to drive about 3 hours (with a couple
of stops, if needed). Last year, I did drive down the night before the
conference. But, my district approved that.

Ugh!! If we do that, when are we supposed to stuff bags and organize
everything else? If we are in the building the day before, don’t we have to
pay for people to be there, one being Security? Things would have to be done
the night before and could not wait the day of such as posters, signs for the
doors, signs for the tables and arrange door prizes. When are we supposed to
eat? (I’m all about food you know)
Then if we do open registration at 11; what time do we start sessions?
Anna, what counties are asking? Are we talking about counties that are just
over the 50 mile range or are we talking about people who are driving at least
4-5 hours to get to Savannah?
