Thanks for the reply Phil.

I use BITS for "every day" updates to these locations, but as the Service
Pack is much bigger, I wanted to get this copied to their LAN's and point
the GPO to deploy from there.

You are better off using WSUS rather than GPO's if you have unreliable
networks. WSUS uses BITS technology to transfer the update in the
background. Group Policy does not use BITS and thus requires even more
reliable bandwidth. BITS can be used on something as slow as dialup. It
won't do the install until the entire package is on the machine and in the
c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution folder.

At Princeton we will be using WSUS to distribute Vista SP1 to around 1200
machines and XP SP3 to around 8000 XP machines. It will be staged over
various WSUS groups.

Subject: [gptalk] XP Service Pack 3 Deployment

Hello all.

I'm going to be using Software Update Services to deploy XP Service Pack 3
to my clients but as our SUS server is based centrally, this can put a
strain on the sites with unreliable networks.

For these instances, I was hoping to use Group Policy for deployment but I
can't find an .msi package for SP3 and I've not deployed an SP using this
method before - any tips and ideas where I can get my hands on the package?

Thanks in advance
