Gatling Pointe Yacht Club hosted the Pagan River Challenge on Sunday, May 18th. While only four of the expected six competitors appeared at the starting line, they experienced a close, challenging race that began at the yacht club pier, negotiated the Pagan River channel to its entrance, and returned to the club. With brisk 20-knot winds from the South West, the very fast race consisted of an exciting power reach downwind to the turning marks at the the Pagan River Entrance, followed by some strenuous upwind work that rewarded hard work and strict attention to wind shifts. The staggered start, with each boat taking its handicap at the beginning of the race, made for an exciting boat-for boat finish, where the first two boats finished within 30 feet of one another, the third boat was only 20 yards behind them, with the last boat coming in a very close fourth. Finish order was: (1) Rebecca (John Wandling), (2) Recovery (John Edwards), (3) Gotcha! (John Perry) and (4) Tranquillity (Tom Orlowski). Hope to see you all on the water this Saturday for race 2 of the WSSC spring series. John
