Hi,
When I use the GPS in a car I will normally focus on the next turn
information.
I would press T or BACCKSPACE with dots 2-3.
The above is a one handed command for the Braille keyboards.
Other people may have suggestions as there's more then one way to use
the system.  
As far as your connecting, yes it is a good idea to wait up to 20/30
seconds before launching the GPS.
1. turn on the GPS receiver.
2. turn on the BrailleNote let them find each other.
3. wait 20/30 seconds and enter GPS.
