Gil, cool thanks. I'm actually thinking of picking up a Braillenote / GPS combo. A close friend has one and let me try it out the weekend before last and it seemed cool all be it expensive for what you get. I wasn't sure if you could pick up GPS data through the aircraft window on comercial flights. I generally don't fly comercial so it's a whole different set of in flight rules. (much less focus on what you're not supposed to do and much more focus on enjoying the flight.) Of course on a comercial flight it's not possible to tell that the guy in row 17 has a gadget that's jamming navigation, in a Citation XL it's pretty clear that if it's not the pilot it's the goofball / goofballs in the back:) so that allows for a certain amount of flexability. It would be cool though to have the GPS data on a comercial flight and the audio from the traffic control that they provide on the in flight headphone system so you could really know where you were and follow along with the pilots. Beats the cheesy movies! Thanks for the pointer. ----- Original Message ----- From: Gil Lutz To: gps-talkusers@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Monday, August 20, 2007 1:59 PM Subject: [gps-talkusers] Re: more empowering technology Scott, You can receive data if you sit near the window and place the receiver in or very near the window. You will ba able to tell your speed, altitude, heading, towns etc. your flying over. I would always ask permission to operate your GPS on an airplane. I hand the flight attendant a letter explaining that I'd like to operate my GPS system and a brief, non technical, description of it. I've used it on many flights and it's really helped pass the time. Gil At 04:22 PM 8/20/2007, you wrote: Can the Braillenote and the associated GPS packages also work on aircraft? What happens if you're on a say comercial flight and you turn it on, do you get location information or is the signal obscured in the aircraft much like FM. I just came back from my Greyhound trip to and from Pen State College. I normally just listen to music while sitting on the bus but this time, I turned the look around mode and have several things set to announce in the repeat. It was so entertaining and I knew exactly where I was and I could learn what were around along the way. Once I got to the hotel, I could use the find command to find all the places and the phone numbers of the places where I can order food from instead of having to call the receptionist of the hotel for the info. It's just so neat. It's almost like we gained another sense. The trip made me think of buying a compass so that I can tell what direction to go to without moving around. Awhile ago, I thought I read somewhere that the Pronto has the compass feature, I wonder if PK can access that function if so, maybe it can be incorporated to the GPS. Yesterday my flight was canceled. While I was at the airport and the agents were looking for the best price hotel for me, I did the following. 1. turned on my braillenote. 2. went into gps, my last saved fix was right where I was standing, (next to the terminal). 2. searched for hotel/accommodations pressed enter on all defaults so I could bring up hotels around the airport. 3. wen we found a hotel that was reasonably priced I said, now is this the hotel on such a street. I used the poi details to get the information. Keep in mind I'm in a strange city I've never been to before. it was empowering to me to be right with them and have an idea where the shuttle was taking me, and how far away.
