Andy,
One thing to mention about Microsoft Streets and Trips is that it offers no
pedestrian functionality and that it isn't accessible at all off the shelf.
There also needs to be mention of the lack of the Braille support with any
of these Small Talk or laptop solutions.

I know of someone who uses Microsoft Streets and Trips running on a laptop.
This is an off the shelf program that sells for about $50. I would imagine
that this does not include the cost of a GPS receiver.
This person is a computer guru, and has written her own JAWS scripts.
Because this is a solution designed for sighted folks to use either in the
car, or to plan virtual trips, it is not, by any means, as feature rich as
the blind oriented products, and because it runs on a laptop, would probably
not be portable enough for a pedestrian, but is much, much cheapter than the
blindness oriented solutions, and may be satisfactory, depending on your
circumstances, and the depth of info that you actually require in your
personal situation.

i don't have a laptop. don't want onte, but know blind people who do have
them and wondered if there was a gps version for laptop users.. If i
remember corectly there was many years ago but just wondered if there still
