If an app is automatically telling you information, the screen may lock on its own, also locking the screen will save your battery quite a bit. I think apps can set the screen not to lock, not sure on that though.

Yes, locking the screen would be a problem, but how often does that actually happen - if you're using the phone to navigate, why would you lock it? I don't have an iPhone, I have an iPod, so I am honestly curious about this one.
For maps, you could download right on the phone I would imagine, which seems like a good option to me - just download overnight while you are on wifi and there you go. Alternatively, you could just connect to google or some other service and use their data. This, of course, has the advantage of being more up to date, but requires a connection (though loss of a connection also means loss of gps positioning, if I understand things right, so losing one nullifies the other anyway). I don't know, but these are interesting things to think about.

This is because, for what reason I'm not sure, Apple does not provide an api for third party apps to use the voices that are already included on the phone, it would certainly make things more efficient if they did. Android would not have this restriction. As far as maps, for IOS, the app would need to provide a way to download the maps for each area, similar to the way navigon does this. On Android, this is also an option, although maps could also be downloaded and copied directly to the memory card. That is one major thing I do not like about IOS, you can't connect it to your computer and have it just show up as a drive where you can copy files straight away. I am waiting to choose a phone, based on what Sendero does. The biggest thing is, that sendero still gives automati information with out having to interact with the phone. GPS means travelling, cane in one hand, ears on the environment and mind on processing the information it receives. That means to be useful as a mobility aid, gps has to automatically tell you the information you will need before you need it. That would make voice control with in the operating platform of the phone in to a useful feature. Unfortunately, microsoft is very late to this party.
