Good point about work justification.

Some counselors ask the question, why should GPS be purchased for my client? There is one answer that goes beyond the obvious O&M benefits of GPS, which is very directly related to obtaining a job. The better a person gets around, the better he or she will be prepared for obtaining a job, maintaining that job and advancing a career. This can be accomplished through a combination of tools like mobility instruction and GPS navigation. This is for all clients, not just those who might travel for work. Like sighted folks, blind people need to get around effectively and GPS provides the equivalent of print signs as well as voice or Braille navigation assistance.

Besides the features outlined in the Sendero GPS flyer and video, there is also a less obvious but equally important reason for having GPS location information to assist in a job search. The Sendero GPS has over 15 million points of interest along with the street maps, ten times as many points as any other system. Think of it like electronic yellow pages with locations attached to each of those points. With this tool, the blind client can conduct geographic research for a place to live, to go to school or to work, completely on their own, with the Sendero GPS and associated database.

For example, the blind client can locate and choose a place to live that is close to public transportation and within accessible reach of the types of companies that might employ that person. The blind client simply puts him or herself virtually at a potential location and then searches by category for nearby transportation facilities. Then, he or she can search along the route of that transportation line for potential employers by category complete with address and phone numbers. One can evaluate the place to live or work to see if the neighborhood is appropriate and has shopping, restaurants and other services in the vicinity. Students can evaluate a college town in the same way. Without ever turning the GPS receiver on, the client has an incredibly powerful research tool that can assist with the entire process of finding housing, transportation and employment. With motivation and good training, GPS can be a very powerful tool for blind people from all walks of life. Many counselors have recognized this value and are already justifying the purchase for their clients. This geo research feature is just one more good reason to consider GPS among the tools to assist your client in becoming gainfully employed.

Note: Besides having ten times the number of businesses compared with Trekker, the Sendero GPS has transit databases in many cities and talking ATM locations nationwide. For more information, call 1-888-757-6810

As a blind professional with 27 years of employment under my belt, I can say that there is nothing more powerful than excellent orientation and mobility.

As a rehab counselor, I can tell you that those reasons alone probably
aren't going to be enough to convince your counselor to get you a gps
solution. You're going to need to justify it from a vocational standpoint as
well, because that's what the voc rehab system is all about. Write in as
much detail as you can about how a gps solution will either help you
maintain your current job or get a new one.

say Trekker Pro in here because there is a place in Atlanta that still have
a few.

I ripped off a sample letter off the net also.

Oh that is this: " me " writing to the Voc rehab person so oops.
