While creating waypoints, one can specify either left or right.  Is that
possible with POIS?

Jim,

Yes, you're on the right track. You can use a waypoint if you're 
marking a point in a manual, walking route. You can also use POIs if 
you want individual things marked. Make sure that when you mark 
anything you don't use left or right in the description because it 
will be wrong when you walk the route in reverse. Use compass 
directions like bench. North of path with trash container to the west of
bench
