Then change those lines to:
export GPODDER_DOWNLOAD_DIR="/media/sf_r1/audio/gpodder"
export GPODDER_HOME="/media/sf_r1/audio/gpodder"
That should set those variables for you.

These lines were in my ~/.bashrc file, not done interactively at the shell:
declare -x GPODDER_DOWNLOAD_DIR="/media/sf_r1/audio/gpodder"
declare -x GPODDER_HOME="/media/sf_r1/audio/gpodder"
