Sure, that'll work!
I found the extension which is 73 lines of code.
I created the Extensions folder under gpodder folder.
Next, how do I copy that code to a file to place in the extensions
folder as a .py file?
There are a number of other extensions, I see. Some may be useful to me.
Thanks!

The rename_download extension has an option to add the date to the filename.
I set it to add make the name the date plus the podcast title plus the
episode title. I then have a script that uses ffmpeg to speed up, compress,
and transcode to OGG. It uses the date, podcast, and episode info to fill
the ID3 tags.

Ah. I see how that *could* work
BUT now (aarrrgh) all podcasts have
lost the
date of download so the order is now effectively
randomized.
What I was hoping for was to
have them all stored in a single folder,
but
have them retain the date they came in so as to be able to
played
back in the order that they were
released.
Maybe for a
future release, a way to number them on export? That'd
be great!

Gpodder on my work computer, so I can't check the
settings. I think you just set a directory in the
filesystem that it syncs all the podcasts to.
