Thanks to all who have responded to date wrt support for a letter going to General Jones asking for an opportunity for public comment prior to a new classification Executive Order being signed by the President. Attached is the latest version with the names and organizations of those who have agreed to date to support this letter. It slightly differs in two regards from the earlier draft. First, it includes a number of non-substantive tweaks offered by Dan Metcalf. Second, it reflects the fact that the Public Interest Declassification Board (PIDB) has endorsed the concept of additional public comment on the actual words of a revised E.O. For those who have not seen, the PIDB letter can be viewed at: http://www.archives.gov/declassification/pidb/letter07-21-09.pdf . I and others do not believe this recommendation of the PIDB vitiates the need for our letter -- on the contrary, it makes it all the more important since there is no guarantee that the PIDB's endorsement of this recommendation will be accepted. For those who have already let me know of your support, please review and ensure I properly captured the name of your organization and the organization official endorsing the letter. If I have left anyone off, please let me know and accept my apologies. For those who would like to support but have yet to let me know, please let me know by 5:00 pm, Thursday, July 30, 2009. The plan is for this letter to be sent to General Jones on August 1, 2009 and publicly released the same day. Regards, jwl
