It's part of C++, but as I understand it, there has been an option to 
enable it in C since quite a few versions back. From what I remember, 
the documentation I read was mostly about structs; not unions.

That said, I only ran into it, hoping for a way to get rid of the 
stupid "something.v->v.something" and whatnot in EEL, but since it 
was GNU-only, I didn't even bother try to use it...
