Good point.  Here are some reasons why I believe we need 64 bit timestamps:

* Existing APIs (VST, DirectX) use 64 bit timestamps.

* At 44.1kHz, a 32-bit signed value can only represent 12 hours of time.
Video post applications need a full 24 hour timeline.  At 192kHz, 32-bit
signed can only represent 3 hours and change.

My vote is that ABSTIME be a sample count, no fractions, 64-bit signed
integer.
