Personally, I think the idea of having a signal represented as a value
between -1.0 and +1.0 is good. However, on some systems it may be slow or
not possible to implement.

Floats are easily scalable, and they have the same range on 32-bit systems
and 64-bit systems. If, however, a 32-bit number was used to represent
signals, there's more range available on 64-bit systems.

Just my thoughts.
