I agree - I don't really see the point of this categorisation. For instance, what happens if you want to write a pitch shifter that can be controlled with a MIDI keyboard? Or write a "monolithic" synth with a vocoder input? I'm also hoping that audio and note information are just indicative of available data types. Obviously we'll need control and configuration values too - and maybe phase vocoder transforms etc... (It remains very important to me that there is flexibility here.) How about we change the wording on this paragraph to something along the lines of: 5. What kinds of plugins do people use today, and what will they want to use in the future? Plugins that generate, manipulate or consume sound-related data, typically music data (e.g. note and performance information) and audio. --Richard -----Original Message----- From: gmpi-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:gmpi-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Marc Poirier Sent: 21 February 2003 16:23 To: gmpi@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [gmpi] Re: Topic 1: Audience for and users of plugins > 5. Most of my effects are Audio+Music-to-Audio. I'm not sure if that falls into what you label "Modular Networks", but I certainly haven't ever thought of them as modular networks, they're just effects that do stuff with music data, too. Anyway, I don't see much point in constructing these rigid categories, and I feel like thinking about these are strictly separate categories has been a downfall for so many music apps, so I'd really prefer to just have an i/o plugin that handles one or more of any stream type on input and output and leave it at that.
