There are actually two issues here:

1) allowing fixed point IO
2) allowing non-FPU systems (this includes parameters and ???)

The issue has been brought up of profiles, and that is what the topic is.

The more I think of it, the less I want to deal with it. A 'profile' is
essentially a variation on the specification. At present we can identify
TWO or at most THREE profiles (float, int, maybe double).

I say that for issue 1 we decide to support ONE type (float) or we decide to
support a short list of types and provide an API for converting between
them.

I say that for issue 2 we punt. Let it be solved once we have a solid spec
for GMPI that deal with modern, fully-capable systems.
