Context switch time is part of real-world results.  host-induced cache
misses is real, but maybe it is reasonable to assume that is minimal when
doing processing?  RAM/system issues may mitigate usefulness across systems,
but on any given system, you'll get a feeling for what the effects of
in-place vs not and for how many 'average' plugins you can support.
