You mean compile a different plug for every possible runtime configuration? Sorry, I think that's a terrible idea. It wouldn't be able to compete with existing formats, much less future formats. I want to be able to produce a surround reverb plug that can handle mono->mono, mono->stereo, mono->5.1, stereo->5.1, and 5.1->5.1, for example, without having to release 5 different products. Oh, and quad->quad and quad->5.1 too.


Now, we can think of packaging all of these inside one container. The plug tells the host what formats it can handle, and then one format is chosen. This is what I call "negotiation".
