actually, no they don't have to access the graph at all. part of the
point of being/writing a plugin is to avoid having to deal with
all that stuff. a VST plugin (for example) has inputs and outputs. it
has no idea what's upstream or downstream.

besides, if i put one plugin in each track, none of the plugins are
even connected to each other.

oh, totally agreed. its just the host is the point of first contact,
and if its not checking, its unlikely to get plugins to check as well.
