For this excellent paper representing some of the best minds from at
least 17 nations. I’m confident wise souls from every nation will agree
with most of it. I particularly cherish your quote *“The Present is
Summary of the Past and the Future is Unpredictable”.*
*Profound! I’m hoping you agree that the future while certainly
unpredictable… is also to a great degree a in our hands moving from the
present- onward. *
I believe the key paragraph in your 45 page offering is: “The natural
individual social responsibility as part of the natural sciences needs to
be established. Rebirth of the forgotten quality of humans is badly
needed for long-term survival under changed environmental/living conditions
within the biosphere of the planet Earth.”
In your initial conclusion you rightfully *“recommend action and work
for universal upbringing and education of humans with individual social
responsibility and abilities to understand the present and to undergo
transformation of body and mind needed for survival of humanity in the
third millennium”*. I’m hopeful you will agree that we also need
transformation of the international systems and structures that are also
disconnected -- from we the people, a sustainable environment and the
global justice vital to any fundamental social transformation.
Your list of “Key Words:” unfortunately did not include ‘justice’. In
this context I urge each of you to read the Executive Summary of the
report by the *Commission on Global Security, Justice and Governance.
The full report was* released June 2015 and co-chaired by former US
Secretary of State Madeline Albright and former UN Under-Secretary General
for Political Affairs, Ibrahim Gambari. The report is titled *Confronting
the Crisis on Global Governance*.

After reading it I believe you will agree that “justice” is ‘the key’
word for sustainably on every issue. And, that it is both urgent and
vital that we not let this report’s recommendations collect dust like so
many of the worthwhile publications that your piece refers to. Please
consider the 85 recommendations in the Commission’s report as the first
steps needed to achieve the grand vision of a sustainable, just and
fulfilling future we all share.
I would like to suggest one more unit to your “*Self-destruction of
Humankind due to Lack of Knowledge” section.*
*‘The self-destruction of our species due to flaws in the human mind’.
Flaws that evolved in a Pleistocene era that are now dysfunctional in our
new era of global interdependence. These flaws include but are not limited
to: *
*1. *Our mind has the capacity to believe anything. ANYTHING!
*2. *We don’t often do what we know we should do.
*3. *We can think of only a few consequences to each of our actions,
and not the thousands that each of our actions actually have.
*4. *We don’t respect the primary role of women and nurturing in
sustaining our species.
*5. *Our comfortable lives allow us to be easily distracted from
what is really important.
*6. *We selectively recall only the experiences and the ideas that
support our limited perspective on life.
*7. *We don’t work well with others who disagree with us.
*8. *We are easily frustrated by failure and most often chose what’s
easy instead of what’s needed.
*9. *We cling to concepts/ideas even though they have been
thoroughly discredited by overwhelming evidence.
I fully support any universal education effort that can accomplish what
we all know is needed. I’m hopeful that one of the fundamental ideas that
will be needed is the global enforcement of the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights, which includes universal education. But then there is the
issue of who will pay for it. I believe there is overwhelming evidence
that we waste far more financial resources by not paying for it up front.
I’m sure many of you can make that case far better than I.
Please allow me one important disagreement with your 48 page document.
On page 37 you state “Present human population is facing lack of food,
drinking and sanitary water, living space, and habitation”. This is
factually incorrect. There is more than enough food, drinking and sanitary
water, living space and habitation IF people have the money to buy it. And,
there is no shortage of money. There is a profound lack of value for
funding these essential elements of life for everyone now on this planet.
Nations and wealthy people chose short term security over justice or
sustainability. There should be no doubt that humanity collectively has
the resources, technology and financing to sustainably support the current
global population (and the increase expected over the next 50 years) IF
(and only if) we value protecting human life and, restoring and sustaining
our environment by following the wisdom of nature. Our former value for
short term profits, political power and our own security -- over the needs
of people and the planet -- that has created the appearance of
insufficiency you mentioned. In this context it is an issue of values and
not money. An issue I’m confident your educational efforts will focus on
and achieve by sticking to the fundamental reality that the first part of
your document adheres to.
This same issue is also related to your “conclusion” which I believe is
fatally flawed. And unless it is rewritten I will not endorse it and will
actively encourage others to shy away from it.
In your conclusion you state that your first goal “is to prevent
explosion of humankind reproduction”. This makes it appear that humans are
the problem instead of the solution. There is overwhelming evidence that a
universal education program that never mentions ‘over population’ - but
instead focuses on meeting the basic human needs of all, will have the
greatest impact on reducing birth rates than any coercive effort. Putting
this goal first suggests this will be one of the ‘enforceable laws’ you
strive for. Most people rightfully believe that the freedom to have
children is a fundamental human right. Given this…the best thing we can do,
is create a world where having few children is a practical and rational
choice. Not an enforced law! It is usually healthy, educated, safe, free
and employed people to choose for themselves to have fewer children.
Frankly I’m shocked that this esteemed group if intellectuals don’t know
this and offer anything other than it.
Your document rightfully focus on the threat posed by the potential abuse
and destruction of nuclear, chemical, biology and other dual-use
technologies. But believing these technologies can be effectively
controlled globally, without a massive investment in intrusive inspections
regimes -- will prove counterproductive to our grand vision.
The goal of universal education specifically on how every technology can
be increasingly, easily and affordably converted to WMD will do more to
motivate the transformation of global systems and structures needed to meet
all human needs sustainably than mobilizing scarce resources and a massive
police force to control them.
Effectively controlling the global research and development of
technologies (if it could even be achieved) would dramatically limit our
capacity to translate current science and technology into sustainable
solutions and systems that most closely mimic natural processes. In this
context an effective universal education campaign has never been more
important, and more urgent.
Only through it will we diminish and hopefully eliminate the human desire
to abuse whatever technology is available, and always will be available.
And, only by eliminating the social, economic, environmental and political
injustices that plague our current world can we dramatically improve our
global security…. and motivate the fastest and unforced reduction in
birthrates.
Finally, while I firmly agree with your statement “one planet, one
government”. I strongly suggest you change your call for the
“establishment of a *new contract for humankind* living on the planet
Earth”.
One alternative… “a new constitution and bill of rights for humankind…”.
Your phrase will easily (and I’m afraid effectively) be twisted by those
who oppose our grand vision. They will claim you want to “enforce” the
“establishment of a *new contract ‘on’ humankind*…” To them…a repressive
world government forcing educational indoctrination and loss of fundamental
freedoms -- freedoms that could quickly engineer vital solutions for the
billions of people immediately in need of food, clean water, energy,
vaccines, and gainful employment….and protecting our environment.
There is no doubt nature is vital to our survival. But there can be no
doubt that allowing millions to live in poverty while each of you (in the
1% you mentioned…and, you are, if you make more than $30,000/year) live in
well-fed, comfort and security.
