Sign Petition Today! Spread the word! Facebook & Twitter In 2001, Congressman Dennis Kucinich introduced this landmark bill into the U.S. House of Representatives. Earlier this year, it was once again re-introduced by Congresswoman Barbara Lee. In honor of this milestone moment, help us get as many folks as possible to take this action -- urging the President to get behind the bill and the bold vision inside it. Thank you all for already helping us surpass our goal of 2500 signers to the petition! Let's keep it going. Sign the petition and forward this email widely - encourage others to take action! >> The legislation calls for a Department dedicated to "peacebuilding, peacemaking, and the study and promotion of conditions conducive to both domestic and international peace and a culture of peace." A few things a Department of Peacebuilding will do: Teach violence prevention and mediation to America's school children Effectively treat and dismantle gang psychology Rehabilitate the prison population Build peace-making efforts among conflicting cultures both here and abroad Support our military with complementary approaches to peacebuilding. Create and administer a U.S. Peace Academy, acting as a sister organization to the U.S. Military Academy. As we continue to push for this bill, we also recognize that the political will to establish another cabinet-level department could take time. That is why we are also pushing the President (and Congress) to get behind shorter term solutions -- NOW. Our petition calls for greater support for a number of key peacebuidling initiatives out there that will help increase our current capacities. We also call on the President to interimly create an Office of Peacebuidling or Advisory Board on Peacebuilding, which is within his power to do. We must work vigilantly to make reality the vision and work powerfully spelled out in a Dept. of Peacebuilding. Join us in asking President Obama to support the establishment of a U.S. Department of Peacebuilding and an Office of Peacebuilding within the White House. Help us spread the word!
