do you not notice the number of foreigners who speak much better English than
most of we native English speakers can manage with a second language?
Paul D

And do you likewise notice how few Australian politicians have a second
language, whereas most Europeans do and speak English excellently..

I put it down to England rules the waves.. Up the British Empire, down with

  Jack L
I have met a number of Danish people in recent years who were just visiting
(thus no advantage gained from living with a second language) and I can state
that all of them had an excellent command of English. I can only guess that
they consider proficiency in English is a prerequisite to being a cosmopolitan
citizen and therefore give it the priority necessary to achieve this.
Now that you are part of the EU and travel within and between countries is so
much easier, do you not notice the number of foreigners who speak much better
English than most of we native English speakers can manage with a second
language?

  Dear Neville,
Regarding Regner, who we know is not English, he has an exceptional command
of the written English language, so much so that I wondered if he actually was
Danish? I thought that perhaps he might be English but with a Danish name e.g.
you don't sound a bit Welsh! Perhaps like Danish bacon he has blue stripes
running along his back:-)
OK Allen what is your native language?

  Jack

    Dear Jack,

I don't know what Allen's native language is, but certainly he (and Regner,
whose native language is Danish) does a remarkable job of explaining technical
concepts to us in our language.

Faced with spelling and grammatical errors, or trying to explain all this
in Russian, for example, I think I'll stick to ... er, hang on, let me think
about that.

    :-)

    Neville
