Robert B
You in blue, me in teal.
======================================
QI: Why should I give you 3 ships to sail west to India, Cristoforo, when you
have not studied sea navigation and theory at the great schools of Spain?
CC: I have great practical experience, your majesty, and wish to push my
explorations further.
QI: But at my MS schools you would learn of the edge of the earth and the great
sea-dragons, about which every student is taught. Only a fool would have a
belief contrary to MS. I won’t finance this fool’s voyage!
And so America was never discovered…. what a pleasant thought. Well some might
but I don't think I agree.
The reality of scientific debate has surely changed from its lofty ideal of
being open to everyone. I definately challenge that. It is easy to fall into
the trap of assuming that just because others dissagree with you that there is
a conspiracy against you, and many do just that. Can I ask if you would go to
http://www.lhup.edu/~dsimanek/home.htm, choose Intelligent Design ..., then
Uses and misUses of Logic? I hope there is at least something here with which
you can agree. For myself, this article speaks most eloquently on the subject
as indeed do a great number of the other articles at this site.
In my on-line debate with a high-ranking MS physicist, he supported GR with a
statement re what inertial frames were like in distant star-systems. I pointed
out that this was unfalsifiable, now and probably until the second coming.
Certainly a relevant and uncomplicated question to answer. But he responded
with a barrage of questions, principally about my academic credentials, even
who my mentor was! Rather than answer my question, he chose to attack the
questioner’s background. Obviously I cannot comment here -- I'd be talking
through my hat. Is this debate accessable to me?
This is a puzzle most difficult to solve
Re a lack of understanding of basic physics:
I plead guilty to not understanding these basic beliefs of MS physics:
the big bang cosmology,
how galaxies coalesce from expanding gas,
the Hubble distance – red shift law
relativity in both flavors
how spacetime is measured
how a human observation creates reality from chaos
For all these shortcomings, I give thanks to God. I plead guilty in these
matters also -- you won't find any challenge from me on them. But I do not give
thanks to God for my ignorance. Do I take it that you claim competance in
Newtonian physics? (I do not claim competance -- just familiarity).
I have no formal training in biology , but my training and understanding in
math-statistics and philosophy-logic lead me to reject evolution, the bulwark
of modern biology. No comment -- it isn't part of cosmology.
Re credentials
I have presented my GR thesis at a relativity seminar attended by Peter
Bergmann, Roger Penrose, John Wheeler, Banesh Hoffman and David Finkelstein
(for those who delight in name-dropping). None of these opposed my thesis. I am
familiar with just one -- Roger Penrose.
Today I realize that my thesis was mathematically sound, impressively couched
in the formalism of tensors, but proceeded from false premises, and so is only
approximately valid. If you claim competance in Newtonian physics, do you also
claim that this is a ' ... false premise ...'?
I said I would tell you about my fourth year high school finals. I passed
English Literature, Maths A, General Science, Geography, History, Drawing and
Commercial Principles and Practice. I failed English Expression.
In my working life I studied Electronics culminating in an equivalent Technical
Officer qualification. Informally, all my life I have read widely but as a
consequence, not deeply, thus I know a little about a lot of things eg
Newtonian Physics, but not a lot about anything.
See? It wasn't so hard after all was it? Now Robert, can we bury the hatchet
and get back to arguing cases on their merit? This sniping back and forth is
wasting both your time and mine.
