Jack,
The gridlines are unintentional and may be a result of allowing the
smoothness setting to be too low...... if that is the case then I am not sure
whether rotating my globe will change anything. If nothing else I'll make it
smoother so they disapear.

          Dear James,
I've just had another look at your drawing and Regner is correct in that the
Earth's grid lines should be about the ecliptic axis. However will this make
any material difference to the model?

Here is the best drawing I can do right now. The orange ball is the earth at
1.5 month intervals during the year. The Green pole is the annual axis. The red
pole is the nightly axis. The blue circles are our camera at 3 hour intervals
each night.

To record 8 points of our annual star trails we will take a picture at
midnight at each of the 1.5 month intervals. The camera position at midnight
for each of the 8 locations must fall on the circle partially descibed by the
blue dots, while also facing directly away from the center of everything (the
sun).

Will this record an annual or a nightly trail?
