One sure way to realize a parking lot is private property is to be involved
in a fender bender on a parking lot. Several years ago, after being in a
collision in a store parking lot (other guy's fault, of course), the police
wouldn't even come out and do a report since it was on private property. No
one injured, not a hit-and-run, they won't touch it on private property.

Most people don't even realize that parking lots are private property,
everyone I know (cachers and non-cachers) think of parking lots as public
property.
