As I was coming back from my check on 3's Company cache at W. Tyson, I ran into the ranger there. He was very nice and we had a good talk. I asked him if he was familiar with GC and he said he was. He said he owns a GPS and has found "Tyson Cache D&G" and "W. Tyson 1". His only concern was W. Tyson 1 (now archived but as a letterbox) and all of the rocks and moss that was disturbed while looking for the cache (or letterbox). I told him that cache had been archived and he was glad of that. I didn't realize though that it was now a letterbox. I asked him how he felt about placing caches here and his concerns. He said he has no problem as long as nothing "delicate" or historic is disturbed. He understands that nothing gets buried and visits GC.Com occasionally. I also asked if he would like to know when or where one is placed and he said "no, just don't start putting a bunch in one area". He said they do not want any new trails in the park and want to keep everything remote but they are having problems with bikes and horses creating new trails as they ride in groups. I asked the obvious question about hikers/cachers going off trail. His answer really surprised me. He said the park is for the public and we can, and should, go where ever we want to discover new areas. Since we are normally all going different directions, creating new trails isn't a problem. He is on the Park Resources board with other rangers from the County Parks. They were discussing future plans and activities and one of the other rangers mentioned geocaching. He joined in and wanted to know how the County Parks were handling caching in general. He said no one had thought about it nor had any recommendations so the subject was dropped and not discussed any more. He said he felt that was good because we are policing ourselves and not causing any problems or concerns. I gave him a SLAGA card and told him if anyone had any problems or concerns with caches in the County Parks, to send an email to info@xxxxxxxxxx and someone in our group would see that the cache owner was notified of the problem. I don't know if he has a GC ID for access to sending emails through the profiles. Before I left he showed me some pictures he took of 4 trail markers left by the Indians? I can't remember the word he used to describe them, but each is a pile of rocks about 3-4' square and about 6' high. He said it might be neat to incorporate those as waypoints to a cache, but wouldn't want anyone removing the rocks to look for a cache. All in all, pretty productive. Rich
