See,, that's easy, you too can get access to high speed Geocaching trinkets and watch Barramus wander with his gps in 7 easy paragraphs. :) Sounds like a big ole hassle too. First, SWB has to be able to physically get ISDN to the house. They actually use the same copper wire as analog, but put signal conditioners on it. They'll want to put their own ISDN switch in the nearest phone switch box to the house. The distance limit is something like 18,000 ft. between them. If you CAN get ISDN, there are three main things you have to do: SIGN A CONTRACT WITH SWB BUY AN ISDN MODEM GET AN ISDN INTERNET ACCOUNT You can buy one 64K channel or two 64K channels from SWB. It cost us about $100/mo for two channels when we lived in Chesterfield, but now that we are in the 'sticks', it costs us $140/mo (supposedly they needed to add a 'signal booster'!). These monthly prices are not consistent across the U.S. I'm pretty sure the mid-west is getting gouged. When I first signed up, SWB required a 2-year contract with a steep cancellation fee. After the 2-years, we only have a month-to-month obligation. I paid about $300 two years ago for an external Courier I-modem. It was one of about 3 good brand choices in the middle price range. If you have two 64K ISDN channels, you'll want a modem that can bind them together when connected (getting a total of 128K bandwidth). Because of the affordability and popularity of broadband (DSL and cable), you can get cheat ISDN modems now on eBay. For internet access using ISDN, you'll have to get an ISDN account with an ISP. Not all ISPs offer ISDN accounts, since they need to have an ISDN modem on their end to dial into. My ISP is ww.networkusa.net (aka ValueNet) and for barebones internet provision (PPP dial-up), it costs only $20/mo. This gives me 100 hours/mo and 1 e-mail address. Many other ISPs will charge $40 or more, but might give you web space and more e-mail addresses. For a static IP address, ISPs will charge well over $100/mo. It's an option if you want to host a web server through the ISDN modem, but that is less cost effective than just paying an ISP to host the site themselves. ISDN is a clean, digital line and SWB guarantees bandwidth in their lines (not guarantee bandwidth to the internet, which is where the issue usually is.) Each channel gets it's own phone number that can be dialed just like any other phone number. Since I have two channels, I can surf with 128K at my disposal, but if an analog call happens to come in on one of the channels, my internet connect will step down to 64K while the other channel is being used. Just takes a little bit of tweaking of the modem configuration to allow that.
