- Remember that when a Texan sees a 15 foot snake, a Missourian would only see it as a eight footer. Bernie Mike Griffin wrote: - Yes.. It has the friendly benjie dog.. They have a couple of miles of trails and a really neat pavillion. It is a little ways upthere but not too far. It might take an hour and a half for people on the south side to get there. It is no farther than Cuivre River SP. Fall picnic, we could perhaps go south. However, it is up to the person or persons puttingon the picnic to choose the location. So far, no one has stepped up todo it.. As far a Big Bend, I use to go there as a youth all the time. We backpacked all over the place there. I remember one time, I woke up with a cougar looking at me. Another time, I saw a 15' sidewinder crossing a dried up creek bed. Many memories from that place. The Guadalupe Mountains were my favorite place to camp as well.. RE: Spring Time - I do not think there is any place to have it in Calhoun County. Marquette Park is right by there and would be a good place. I just got back from my AZ trip that turned into a trip to TX. We got to Organ Pipes National Monument expecting a warm and dry back pack in the desert. The first problem was most of the park, including where we wanted to go, was closed due to safety issue from border issues (drug running and illegal crossings). Then the rain came and it rained it rained. It looked like a wetland, not a desert. It was supposed to rain for 2 more days non stop. So we gave up and headed for the Grand Canyon. The forecast was for an inch of snow. We got to within 30 milesof Flagstaff (right at 6,000 feet) and hit a blizzard. The weather radiosaid they were going to get 2 feet. So we turned back to the rain in thelower elevations and got a motel. Then we headed for Big Bend National Park in TX. It was warm and dry and a very neat spot. We ended up driving 4,444 miles and I took over 400 pictures. Anyone care to step up and help out? It's not that hard to do. Last time we went to Illinois, I would suggest someplace North or South this time. Perhaps Calhoun County or Herculaneum.
