Welcome dan.  I am sure that your GPS device has the capability to switch the 
display into different forms of a readout.  Just dig deeper in the manual or 
start pushing mode buttons, or meet one of us on a cache and we will figure 
it out together.

Otherwise, there are 60 Minutes in a degree, 60 seconds in a minute.
For instance, Pray for the USA is displayed on geocaching in degrees and 
minutes 
N 38° 47.3406'             W 090° 34.0938'
There are 60 minutes in a degree (think of a clock). so to convert this to a 
decimal, The northern would be
38° 47.3406' = 38 + (47.3406/60)° = 38 + .78901 = 38.78901°
Likewise, there are 60 seconds in a minute (like a clock) so to convert the 
other way.
38° 47.3406' = 38° 47' (60 x .3406)" =  38° 47' 20.436"
