- Actually there is someone that has developed an even better way of doing it. They read the grooves optically so there is no "needle" that even touches the surface of the record. It simulates what the actual needle would produce if it were in contact with the groove.

They contracted the guy to save some of the recordings at the National Archives, or something like that, where there were one of a kind types of records.  And for those JFK conspiracy folks.... it seems that they are going to apply the same process to look at the recording loops of the Dallas police radio recordings from the assassination to determine how many shots were REALLY fired and from where.
