Nancy,

I *just* went to a corporate AT&T store the other day, and can report
a few things. Now, I don't have the money to afford anything I really
wanted, but I can tell you what they have.

If you're wanting an all-in-one for caching (GPS, PDA, etc), I think
either the iPhone or Palm devices will work the best. I can't tell
you how the iPhone app works, but I'd assume it's similar to loading
the information into a Palm (download the info to the phone), so there
would be no downloading involved. However, I'm sure you could
directly connect to gc.com using it, and get the most current
information. The Palm phones have built-in GPS. I don't know how
accurate it is, or even if it would work easily with caching. It can
give you driving directions, though.

Cost? The phones, with a 2-year contract, will run close to $200 a
piece. For GPS, it's an additional $10/month. You'll probably need a
data plan, which can run you at least $30-40/mo. This doesn't include
your phone service, which will be at least $50-70/month.

If you go in and make the impression that you're about to get phones
for the whole family, they'll probably give you better deals. Also,
shop their website before purchasing. I'd suggest going to the store,
seeing what you like and writing down the final price they give. Say
"thanks," walk out, and check their website. Usually, the prices are
better online. Write those prices down. Go back into the store a few
days later. They might try to give you a better deal than before,
thinking you've shopped around and possibly found competitive deals.
If they don't give you a price equal or better than online, tell them
what you saw online. They'll "talk to the manager" and come back with
a yes or no. From there, take what you're comfortable in.

My wife went to the store with 2 phones she liked. After looking at
them at the store, she narrowed it down to 1. They wanted to give her
one deal, but she knew the price online. They ended up giving it to
her for that price.

Remember, they want your business, but they have to make money, too.

Sorry it's not brief, but that's my .02 of the issue. Personally, I
like having separate devices for each use (directional GPS, caching
GPS, cell phone, and Palm). That way, if I lose something, I didn't
lose it ALL.
