- Headed out to KC on Friday with about 500 caches loaded, maps printed, GPX files sitting on the PDA and everything was running smoothly. I have never had a problem with any of this setup. As a precaution against PDA failures, I installed GPX Sonar on the storage card. It has been so stable for so long that a while back I deleted Cache Dragon and GPX View off the PDA to clear up space. Usually before leaving I make a backup of the PDA to the storage card just in case something should go wrong. We stopped to find a cache along the way on Friday and all was well. I realized that i didn't make my backup so I started one when we got back to the car. 20 minutes later I checked the PDA and it was hung doing the backup and had quit responding. Not to worry, soft reboot and all will be well. Or so it seemed. On rebooting everything worked just fine. Mapopolus was happily running maps so I decided to go ahead and fire up GPX Sonar... " 'GPX Sonar' is not a valid PPC Program" it said. Oh heck!! (not exactly in those words). Shut down, reboot.... same thing. Navigate to the folder, start from there... same thing.. "Oh heck!!" Not to worry, I have a backup from the last KC Trip.... restored the backup.... Same thing.. At this point, things were not looking good. I just remembered, the "Sonar" is stored on the memory card and is not backed-up each time. Only the programs in main memory is backed up.. BUT WAIT, My old copy of GPX VIEW should be there...... Oh HECK, I took it off BEFORE I made the B/U for the last KC trip. Cache Dragon was not there as well. By this time we were nearly to KC with lots of waypoints and no sheets. BUT WAIT.... one last failsafe and redundant emergency system. http://wap.geocaching.com will work from the phone!! It is slow as the dickens, I loose all the sorting and functionality of Sonar but, I can look up and see the cache pages. :-) (Running that interface from the desktop is lighting fast as it has minimal text and no graphics) So, we got up Saturday and proceeded to skip around and see the sights and find whatever looked good near wherever we were. We were able to squeak out 22 (i think) using this "last resort" system. I cant tell you where we were but we found out way there and back without incident. I really like camping in Flemming Park. It has a very nice campground. Sunday morning (today) we were treated with the sights and sounds of aviation history as the 1929 Ford Tri-motor flew overhead all morning long. What a sight to behold. For me, that in itself made the trip worthwhile. I hope I don't need to rely on the phone interface much but it is nice to know that it does work.
