- Many of you enjoyed my tale of the ice crossing to this cache last Winter. Here is someone who should have waited until February! For those hoping to snag Row, Row, Row your boat (except GYMSON), please read this story in the Daily Herald: http://www.dailyherald.com/cook/main_story.asp?intID=3834767 Man falls through ice on lake By Steve Zalusky Daily Herald Staff Writer Posted Sunday, December 26, 2004 Elk Grove firefighters rescued a man who fell into an icy Busse Woods lake Saturday afternoon. The victim is at Alexian Brothers Medical Center and was said to be in critical condition. Alexian officials said the man fell through the ice at about 1:30 p.m. "Witnesses heard the guy say, 'I'm going to go out and test the ice,' " Elk Grove fire Lt. Michael Turner said. Unfortunately for the victim, the ice proved less solid than one might suspect during the latest cold spell. The ice cracked under him. "Believe it or not, the ice was pretty thin," Turner said. "After all this cold weather, you would think it would be thick." Turner said the reason is the water there is warmer than in other lakes and ponds. That is because the lake is fed both by treated water from a nearby plant and from a spring. "Unless it gets cold for a long time, the ice is not safe," he said. Elk Grove firefighters and police and Cook County Forest Preserve police were at the scene of the rescue. Turner said the units showed up within seconds of each other. Turner said one of the firefighters put on what they call a "Gumby suit" and then entered the chilly confines, with a rope attached to the suit. After he reached the victim, the two were pulled onto a concrete surface. The victim was then lifted onto a stretcher. Once the victim was out of the water, efforts to revive him began before he was taken to the hospital. **************************************** Our WebPage!
