That brings up a newbie question....How long do caches generally stay
active? As long as the hider is willing/able to maintain them? Until
hell freezes over? Until Saddam is ousted from power? Or......?

In general they stay as long as the cache owner continues to maintain them. A owner should consider archiving or moving them if they start to have impact on the environment ie social trails leading to them etc. A cache owner can archive a cache at any time they desire or feel is appropriate.

It just struck me I had no idea when I read the above and my initial reaction was..."More caches?!? Are you daft, mon. The STL area of the MO map at gc.com is already just one big bluish-green blob."

Yes there are alot of caches in the St Louis area however you will be surprised how fast you can run out of caches to find in the area :-)
