My old Vista quit working and I got a RMA number from Garmin to send it
back. Then I tried one more thing before deciding whether to send it back or
not. I just laid it out in the yard and let it sit there for a very very
long time. It started working again. Bernie.

I guess my sad story didn't play very well...Garmin wants $125 to fix it and
a new Vista can be had for $160 or so.
After doing a Google search I found some instructions for self
repair...after I figure out which unit I would like (can afford) if my
repair job fails, I will attempt to fix it myself.
